Demeter is one of the daughters of Titans Cronus and Rhea and sister to Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera and Hestia.
She is the loving mother of Persephone who was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld. Demeter can only see Persephone for only two thirds of the year (spring and summer) and for the remaining year, Persephone returns back to the underworld, which halts plants and crops growing (autumn and winter). It is Demeter's mood which dictates the seasonal change.
She has seven children in total but rarely portrayed with male consorts. In art, she is depicted as an older, motherly goddess, usually with her daughter Persephone by her side.
